Reading engulfing pairs at UK open volatility
Between 08:00 and 09:30 London time, ranges often expand. An engulfing pair printed in that window can look dramatic simply because the prior candle was compressed overnight. Size alone is a poor filter.
We prefer a relative measure: the engulfing body should reclaim at least half of the preceding down-swing on the timeframe you trade, not merely cover the previous body. On a five-minute chart that may mean waiting for the fifteen-minute candle to confirm the same idea.
False engulfings frequently open with a gap and close back inside the prior range by mid-morning. If you enter on the first five-minute close, keep a plan for that failure. In the Pattern Recognition Clinic we run timed drills using unmarked London-open sequences so you feel the difference between a sustained reclaim and a one-candle spike.
Keep a session tag in your notes. Engulfings that form after a quiet Asian range into a clear daily level behave differently from those that appear mid-trend during a news burst. Separating those environments reduces the urge to treat every large candle as a reversal signal.
